This photograph was taken inside one of the few remaining churches in the heart of Gaza City—the medieval Church of Saint Porphyrius. Named after the 5th-century bishop of Gaza, Saint Porphyrius, whose tomb lies in the northeastern corner, the church has a rich and complex history. It has been rebuilt several times over the centuries and has served as a sanctuary for the Palestinian people during times of war. The church’s architecture and artwork are both ancient and breathtaking, with murals in every corner that tell stories of Jesus, the Palestinian. These murals mark significant points in history and reflect the deep connection between the church and the land. Over the years, the church has been targeted multiple times by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), in attempts to erase any symbols or structures that tie Palestinians to their heritage and homeland.
